La Réunion lé la

We are more excited than ever to take our flight to the Reunion island. This will be the last stop of our world trip, but also a bit different: Edouard's family comes from here. As he never visited this place, we planned to meet with every member of the family ! This will definitely intense and with lots of emotions.

We were welcomed and hosted by his cousin Gérard and his wife Brinda as well as their two daughters Virginie and Sophie. They gave us a warm welcome and from the beginning we felt at ease.

The objective of this trip was to spent as much time as possible with family. We still did some hikes and visits.

Volcanic island

La Réunion was created by a volcano, which climax is at 3071 meters above sea level, named piton des Neiges. Wherever you go on, it can be seen this volcanic black rock, which makes landscapes so unique. Here, we can see volcano, rivers, ocean, city, countryside it is everything we like. So, between some family lunches, we went out to explore what the island has to offer.

Right after our arrival, we sailed on a catamaran with Virginie, and were lucky to see some dolphins et jump in the water... without sharks!

On Saturday, we strolled around the alleys of Saint-Pierre's marker. A condensate of local smells, tastes and colours. We even ate an amazing home made coconut ice cream !

After that, we went to the Yellow cap and Langevin river. A nice hike in company of cousins Véronique, Sébastien, Laurence and their kids. At the end, a huge yellow cliff and turquoise water at the bottom. Then, we refreshed ourselves at the river and played with kids as if we were 10 years old too!

To have a good overview, we drove around the island, taking the costal road. We passed by some impressive lava flows. A great day spent with oncle François and aunt Marie José.

Then, the two of us, we visited the one of the three calderas of the island: Cilaos. Its peaks, calderas and natural battlements are registered at the UNESCO World Heritage. We hiked and enjoyed a splendid point of view and refreshed ourselves in a natural pool with crystal clear water.

Near the end of our stay, we climbed the Peak of the Furnace, 7h30 ascending go and back. With Luna, Léa, Océane and their parents. This kids are impressive, they never gave up and we reach the top altogether. From up there, a breathtaking view on the crater and we were above the clouds!

How can we describe in few lines this feeling we had of meeting all these incredible people?

By numbers maybe. Edouard has 7 oncles and aunts which we could all meet. We started a family tree, and we counted 36 cousins, 63 first cousins once removed and 7 first cousins twice removed !

Edouard has very few family in France, it was an amazing discovery, a new family thousands of kilometers away.

The only issue with Reunion island appears when you have to leave. It is an amazing place but what made this trip unique was the encounter with our family. For sure, we will come back!
